Satnam Singh is a great friend of mine, an Indian by birth, raised in Glasgow with a true Scottish brogue, and now a US citizen expatriated to the UK. He once recently had his hair bleached out and commented that he looked like a pint of Guinness. Satnam is a very creative and high energy person. For those with the skills and the interest, he would be a good person to work under. Duncan A. Do you have anyone you can recommend? I am particularly interested in students with good FPGA skills (either Xilinx or Altera) using VHDL/Verilog or other high level hardware design languages. I would find it particularly useful to have interns that are good at developing video applications. Other useful skills include functional programming (Haskell, ML, Ocaml, F#) and formal methods skills (e.g. hardware verification). The general research direction I am taking at Microsoft Research Cambridge is to explore techniques for programming heterogeneous systems. The grand aim is to devise a set of domain specific languages / tools that can capture certain kinds of calculations in a high level manner which allows them to be elaborated effectively onto various computational resources. Initially I will only focus on small parts of this large research problem! For example, we’ve had luck compiling Lava data-parallel descriptions to FPGAs, GPUs and multi-threaded code. The URL for applying for an internship is http://research.microsoft.com/aboutmsr/jobs/internships/default.aspx There is a lot of competition and a limited number of places so I can’t guarantee any places but I shall do my best to try and get positions for outstanding students. If you have students that want to intern in the USA then there are some people that might take on FPGA-esque students at Microsoft’s main campus in Redmond (Washington) and I can help to make recommendations to specific groups.
